Biography
Prof. Sumit Saxena is a distinguished Professor in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science at IIT Bombay. His academic credentials include a PhD in Materials Science & Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT, USA), followed by postdoctoral research at both the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Harvard University. A recognized expert in 2D materials, graphene, metamaterials, energy storage, and water purification, Prof. Saxena combines both theoretical modeling and experimental techniques, including first-principles electronic structure calculations. His work at the NEMO Lab focuses on exploring novel metamaterial structures and functional materials for energy and environmental applications. Prof. Saxena's research contributions include several patents—such as achromatic metallic microlenses and carbon-based membranes for desalination and dye degradation—as well as impactful publications in high-impact journals. He holds fellowships with several prestigious bodies, including the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOMMM, UK), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC, London), and National Environmental Science Academy (FNESA, India). Prof. Saxena’s active research and collaborative leadership continue to advance sustainable and cutting-edge materials science at IIT Bombay.
