Course Description

Course Objectives:

  1. To demonstrate an initiatory understanding of trade routes, clothing evolution, cultures, and traditions

  2. To understand an overview of the history of clothing and textile and its importance and significance from different aspects

  3. To understand the origin of Indian textile routes and create a route map

  4. To develop fashion products with contextualizing and express in varied media of choice, to argue design aligned points of view

Course Outcomes: 

By the end of the course, the student will be able to: 

  1. Understand an orientation of the evolution of clothing and trade routes

  2. Demonstrate connections between disciplines to establish a seamless process 

  3. Analyze important information on apparel structure and functions through culture and identity with a combination of primary and secondary research 

  4. Identify competencies that contribute to the process of projects

  5. Contextualize and express in varied media of choice, to argue design-aligned points of view

Course Content:

Silk Route – Clothing, culture and identity

  1. Introduction to the Course, project brief, assessment and assignments submission
  2. Silk route – History.
  3. Design and aesthetic travelling along silk route.

Evolution of Clothing

  1. Pre historic – Concept of clothing, theories
  2. History of clothing, textile and fashion
  3. Ancient, medieval, renaissance, Colonial, industrial revolution, 20th century, 21sth century.
  4. Clothing then and now

Course Syllabus

Class schedule to be shared. Introducing each other creatively and understanding the objective of the course. Assessment & Assignment submission methods, naming your assignments, etc., and introduction to the course and the unit.

  1. Students to bring 10 pictures from family album. Year ranging from 1950 till did.
  2. Write the observation about the clothing in all the picture.

This observation assignment should be done in a chart through mind mapping technique.

  1. What is silk route?
  2. Routes

To understand the goods that traveled through silk routes

  1. Students in groups to create the textile routes map of India.
  2. The map should be creatively created with detailing. From where the road starts and the journey.

Format: Creative book

To work in class as group and complete the project.

  1. Pre historic of clothing
  2. Concept of clothing, 
  3. Theories of clothing

Walk in review of the creative book display

  1. Origin and history
  2. Clothing in different aspect
    1. Comfort, Functions, cultural, political
    2. Global trades

Ancient, medieval, renaissance, Colonial, industrial revolution, 20th century, 21sth century

Timeline of evolution of Clothing:

Create visual board – detail study of clothing evolution and how each era influences from each other’s -  90’s -21st century.

Students to display the work for review

List of work:

1. Textile routes of India – Creative book.

2. Timeline of evolution of Clothing – Visual board.

Speculate ideas of fashion/apparel and its function evolution in 200 years from now (Individual/ collaborative) and create Tangible fashion product Mock up.

Will the function of Pocket remain as it is now?

What was the function of corset when it has been innovated? And now?

This project will help you understand functions of Apparel parts and how the influences of visiting cultures have changed the original meaning and you will speculate what could happen in the future

Study and initiate an idea /concept Reference Visual images.

  • Write up about the concept/ idea.

Note: the idea generation is open. You need to see and think wide open

Each student creates the process road map to execute the deliverable
