Khushnaz Ashdin Turner, also known as Kat Diaries, is a multi-talented woman who manages to juggle being a mom of two, an entrepreneur, and an influencer, all in one day. She has made a name for herself in the digital world, becoming a popular content creator on Instagram with a large fan following. Her Instagram feed is a visual feast with beautiful pictures, and her IGTV videos are engaging and informative. Khushnaz’s fashion shoots showcase her personality beautifully, and her fashion sense has inspired many of her followers.

Recently, Khushnaz conducted a masterclass for the students of ATLAS | ISDI School of Design and Innovation on “The Influencing World”. In the masterclass, Khushnaz shared her journey as an influencer and provided insights into how aspiring influencers can make it big in this industry.

Age is just a number

Khushnaz’s personal account of her journey is inspiring. Before venturing into influencer marketing and becoming an influencer herself, she worked in marketing and sales for 15 years. She entered the influencer space very late in her life, after her friends encouraged her to become an Instagram influencer because of the way she used to dress up daily for work and otherwise. She emphasises that age is not a barrier to success in this field; it’s all about how you manage and manoeuvre yourself. Khushnaz believes that once you hit your thirties, you become a more confident version of yourself, and you know where you stand in life.

Age doesn’t define this space.

Explore and experiment

Khushnaz’s journey as an influencer has been a remarkable one. She has worked on 16 TV commercials and has styled celebrities like Huma Kureshi, Sonal Chauhan, Malaika Arora, and many more. Her collaboration with PR Pandit to launch a clothing retailer was also a huge success. Her success as an influencer is not limited to content creation. She hosts events, collaborates with designer lines and jewellery lines and has found her niche in the luxury segment. She believes that influencers should explore and experiment with different avenues for earning, and not settle to do anything for free. She advises aspiring influencers to start something of their own, something unique that nobody else has.

Content creation is not the only earning avenue for an influencer.

Find your niche

According to Khushnaz, finding your niche is essential to becoming a successful influencer. You need to decide what area you want to specialise in, be it fashion, beauty, luxury, or something else. This space is vast and you need to be relevant constantly. You need to be creative and innovative with your content and find ways to set yourself apart from others.

Define, discover and rediscover your purpose

Khushnaz emphasises that defining, discovering and rediscovering your purpose is crucial to succeeding as an influencer. She says that in the lockdown, she realised that she had lost her purpose somewhere along the line. Her purpose was to share what comes naturally to her, to help somebody with their style. She helps people from all across India with their styling needs and while this may not make as much money as she does in this space, it gives her immense satisfaction to know that she is making a difference in someone’s life.

Making difference to somebody’s life is what drives me.

Consistency, diligence and hard work

Khushnaz stresses the importance of consistency, diligence, and hard work. To stay relevant in this fast-moving space, you need to constantly research and find inspirations that you look up to. Hard work and consistency can’t be replaced with anything, and someone who is willing to put in more hard work than you can easily replace you.

Plan your day in advance

According to Khushnaz, planning your day in advance is important. She keeps her days and time reserved for certain things and plans everything really well. She also emphasizes that influencing people is all about content.

Be true to yourself

Khushnaz’s family has been supportive of her journey as an influencer. Her kids have seen her working their whole life, and sometimes trolls and hate on social media affect them. But she believes in being true to herself and her audience. When she talks to her audience, she is being very true to herself. She believes that one should be true to their audience and themselves to succeed as an influencer.
