The ATLAS uGDX Summer Tech School 2023 was an incredible opportunity for young tech enthusiasts in grades 9 to 12 to delve into the world of machine learning and artificial intelligence. Held from June 5th to 12th, this intensive 8-day program provided participants with a platform to learn, experiment and collaborate on cutting-edge technologies. From acquiring high-demand skills to working on exciting projects, this summer school left a lasting impact on the students’ technological prowess and ignited their passion for innovation.
Experiencing the World of Technology
ATLAS uGDX Summer Tech School aimed to equip students with a strong foundation in technology while fostering their problem-solving and innovative thinking skills. The participants’ day-to-day experience at ATLAS uGDX Summer Tech School 2023 was packed with diverse and engaging activities. From assisting companies in building better products to diagnosing COVID patients and exploring the artistic side of AI, each day offered a new and exciting opportunity to learn and create. The program not only expanded our technical skills but also sparked our imagination and encouraged us to think innovatively.
Day 1: Let’s Help Companies Build Stuff! : Dr. Siddhart S Rajendran
From the very first day, the participants dived into action and learned how to contribute to various industries. They explored how statistics can assist aircraft companies in building better engines and pharmaceutical companies in developing improved medicines. In addition, they discovered the art of winning game shows and studied the formation of social media networks.










Day 2: Let’s Guess What Happens in Stock Markets! : Dr. Saketha Chandra
On the second day, the students delved into the world of investment and learnt how to help their parents make better financial decisions. Through hands-on exercises with stock data and Excel, they built models to predict whether a stock price would rise or fall before it happened.








Day 3: Let’s Help Journalists Filter Out Bad Content : Prof. Sujit Dhanuka
The participants tackled the challenge of filtering through a massive number of Quora questions to identify genuine ones versus those created to spread hate. Using the power of AI and natural language processing, they honed their skills in quickly and accurately classifying content that requires human editors days or weeks to analyse. This technology forms the basis for ChatGPT, the language model they used during the program.




Day 4: Let’s Help a Doctor Diagnose COVID Better : Prof. Sumit Tripathi
Day four presented them with complex problems to solve. Despite having no medical background, they built an AI system that could diagnose a COVID patient by analysing their X-ray images. This remarkable application of computer vision, also utilised in self-driving cars, demonstrated how technology can aid doctors in their diagnoses.





Day 5: Let’s Compose Music and Paint Using AI : Dr. Siddhart S Rajendran
During this creative day, the participants ventured into the realm of art with the help of AI. They learned to generate beautiful artwork and compose melodies without having any prior knowledge of music theory or artistic techniques. It showcased the fusion of our left-brain analytical skills with right-brain creativity.





Day 6: Morning Half – Understanding Digital Technologies : Dr. Dakshinamurthy V Kolluru
We dedicated the morning to understanding the digital technologies that enable AI to accomplish such remarkable tasks. We explored the underlying principles and mechanisms behind these innovations, gaining a deeper appreciation for their capabilities.

Days 6 and 7: Work on Your Own Ideas
These two days were dedicated to unleashing the students’ creativity. They were tasked with conceptualising our own ideas and leveraging the knowledge they had acquired throughout the program. They developed high-level designs and created presentations to showcase their unique concepts.




Day 8: Present Your Idea
On the final day, the participants had the opportunity to present their ideas to the program organizers. Each participant showcased their project, and the best idea was rewarded with a prize. It was an exciting culmination of their efforts and a testament to the knowledge and skills they had gained.
