In a world where diplomacy and international cooperation have never been more critical, the Rotaract Club of ATLAS (RC ATLAS) at ATLAS SkillTech University organised a groundbreaking event that brought students closer to the heart of global issues. MUNZIL, a two-day Model United Nations (MUN) conference, served as a platform for 163 enthusiastic student delegates and over 100 dedicated Organising Committee members to explore the intricacies of diplomacy, international relations and the workings of the United Nations.

Under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Indu Shahani, Founding President & Chancellor of ATLAS SkillTech University MUNZIL provided a unique learning opportunity that transcended the boundaries of traditional education. Let’s delve into the rich discussions and impactful resolutions that emerged during this enlightening event.

Diplomacy in Action: Exploring Geostrategic Dynamics

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session at MUNZIL tackled one of the world’s most pressing issues: The Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. Delegates representing various nations gathered to dissect the conflict’s historical roots, current consequences and potential paths to peace. Diverse viewpoints painted a complex picture of rising tensions and safety concerns for Armenians in Azerbaijan.

Mozambique raised reservations about the ceasefire agreement, reflecting a broader atmosphere of mistrust. The UAE, despite its geopolitical conflicts, took on a peacemaking role by offering mediation services. Russia, with its ties to the region, committed to negotiating the border dispute and emphasised diplomatic solutions. Iran provided humanitarian aid and advocated for mutual assistance while subtly addressing Turkey’s alleged support for Armenia. Albania stressed UN principles and international cooperation as vital for conflict resolution.

These discussions illuminated the intricate nature of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict and the collective aim of nations to secure lasting peace.

Combatting Drug Trafficking: A Global Imperative

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) session addressed the ever-pressing issue of drug trafficking. Delegates grappled with the impact of drug trafficking on non-state actors, adopting resolutions on opium supply and demand balance. Though a final decision remained elusive, recommendations included region-specific strategies, support for opium-dependent communities, better intelligence sharing and the dismantling of financial networks.

Belgium even proposed a spiritual approach to this challenging issue. The conference concluded with a shared sense of urgency to combat drug trafficking’s global consequences, underscoring the power of diplomacy and international cooperation.

Human Rights in the Age of Westernisation

In the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session, delegates engaged in a lively debate on human rights violations in the Middle East attributed to Westernisation. They explored the intricate relationship between Westernisation, human rights, and the region’s unique cultural and political contexts. While Westernization has brought progress, it has also raised concerns about restricted freedom of expression, gender inequality, migrant worker exploitation and cultural identity erosion.

Delegates emphasised the need for a balanced approach, recognising the importance of modernisation alongside cultural preservation. Diverse perspectives emerged, highlighting the intricate interplay of human rights and Westernisation.

Lok Sabha: The Fiery Battle for India’s Future

The Lok Sabha Model United Nations conference witnessed passionate debates on critical issues plaguing India, such as the Manipur attacks, the Hathras case and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The BJP and Congress squared off with differing viewpoints, leading to intense exchanges and spirited confrontations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolute pledge set the tone for a day of fiery discussions, with the fate of India hanging in the balance.

G20: A Global Dialogue on Security

The G20 session delved into evolving security challenges in an interconnected world. Leaders emphasised cooperation and intelligence sharing to combat terrorism and cybersecurity threats. Discussions revealed the importance of addressing root causes like economic instability and social disparities to curb extremism.

This session highlighted the critical need for investing in partner capabilities and international collaboration for regional security and global stability.

Remembering September 11th: Two Decades After the Attacks

Finally, the conference paid tribute to the memory of 9/11, a pivotal moment in modern history. Delegates revisited the impact of that fateful day and the lessons learned for a safer world.
